EP128: Comedian Dustin Chafin | Touring, Sobriety, & Finding the Funny

In Episode 128 of the Corpus Christi Originals Podcast, host Jesús Hilario Hernandez sits down with touring stand-up comedian Dustin Chafin ahead of his headlining weekend at the Mesquite Street Comedy Club in downtown Corpus Christi.
Dustin opens up about his 18-year sobriety journey, transitioning from cutting his teeth in the New York City comedy scene—sweeping floors and cleaning toilets just to get stage time—to performing on arena tours alongside Nate Bargatze and TJ Miller. They dive deep into the mechanics of comedy: how to build a versatile "comedy toolbox," the split-second art of profiling an audience, navigating clean versus edgy material, and why performing in tough rooms builds a comedian’s "immune system." Dustin also shares stories from his upbringing in Kilgore, Texas, his Choctaw heritage, and learning Spanish in Chile by watching dubbed copies of Star Wars.
Catch Dustin Chafin live at Mesquite Street Comedy Club on Friday and Saturday, September 18th & 19th. Watch his Dry Bar Comedy special Cranky Pants and check out his guest appearance on WTF with Marc Maron (Ep. 1659).

What's going on, y'all? Jesus Ladio Nandes back at it again, Corpus Christi Regionals Podcast. Today we are joined with Dustin Chaffin. What's going on, Dustin?
SPEAKER_05What's up, man? Good to see everybody.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, is that how you say your last name?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you said it right. Perfect.
SPEAKER_01I love it. So, Dustin, if you guys don't know him, well, tell us about yourself, Dustin.
SPEAKER_05Oh, man. Was it a job interview? Um five years.
SPEAKER_01Man, the one the one that I gotta go me a little bit.
SPEAKER_05Give me something.
SPEAKER_01You know how about uh uh what's one what's the quality that you that you don't that you don't like about yourself? Or what what what are those questions?
SPEAKER_04Is this therapy? What's happening? Am I gonna start crying in the middle of this? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's that's the thing, bro. I I I plan my my uh social interactions one hour a week, and you you're the lucky person.
SPEAKER_03Hang out with kids all day. So adults are like, all right, man, I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to do this.
SPEAKER_01Remind me. No, no, but so Dustin is uh tour touring comedian, tour with Nate Barghetsi, among a bunch of other accolades that you've got. Uh, you got Crazy Pants on the dry bar dry bar comedy on uh was it YouTube or whatever? Is that right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well they have their own uh app, they have like a streaming service as well, dry dry bar comedy. It's like a yeah, you know, you could sign up for it kind of thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you were on uh Mark Marin's podcast, episode 1659. Super awesome. Um, but yeah, this is a lot of stuff. 18 years sober, man. That's a that's a that's pretty dope.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, uh that's yeah, that's that's that's a tough one, man. But uh being sober in comedy is rough, you know, where you're just like you're just you're performing in bars, essentially. You know, most of the time it's just like everybody's drinking and having a good time. You're like, hey man, I'm sober, and like you just buzzkill the whole room, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, for sure.
SPEAKER_05They're like they're waiting. You're like, ah, I'm gonna tell you about my sobriety.
SPEAKER_01Well, shoot, down here, like I because I cut I do mostly clean too, and like when I go up, I'm like the the tenth one up. They're just I can feel him like bracing, like, when's he gonna say when's he gonna drop the F-bomb? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's hilarious.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Uh so yeah, I you know, I uh I'm coming to Corpus Christi, which is always exciting. My mom's in Dallas. I'm gonna go see her for a couple of days. She's at this assistant living place, which is not a nursing home. I gotta make that clear. I'm not a monster. Um, but we got her in a like a little, you know, it's got a little kitchen, a little thing, whatever. So I'll go see her and awkwardly, you know, just defend her from all the uh horny old men that are just roaming the halls of these places. They're always hitting on my mom, and I'm like, dude, it's like I'm gonna break your other hip. Like, leave her alone, dude. This one dude we call him scratchy, he won't stop scratching my mom's back. I'm like, she don't want you to touch her, man. Like, I gotta bow up to a dude that's like 86.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, oh man, what are you doing, man?
SPEAKER_05Anyway, I'm gonna deal with that for a couple of years.
SPEAKER_01Oh, shanks. Wow, man.
SPEAKER_05Then I'm making that glorious drive from Dallas to uh Corpus. So that that that short little drive there. I'll be uh driving that. But uh yeah, so uh doing that and at the Mesquite Street Comedy Club, uh, which we were talking a little bit before we started. But uh yeah, I've been coming here. Uh it's probably my fifth or sixth time. Um I've worked with uh some other people, like I worked with Nate Brigazzi once at the at the uh uh the venue, not the downtown, but the other venue, and then TJ Miller. We did a couple shows there, and then I headlined uh a couple times, be like my third time headlining there. We did a big arena show as well uh with Nate. And so yeah, I always loved Corpus. You know, though I remember last time I was there, um, you know, I got like a little hotel, one of those like uh it was like you know, try to save money, you know, as a comic. You're like, I'm gonna save some money. Yeah, I got like a super eight, but it was more like an okay seven, you know.
SPEAKER_01It was like I like that bit you did on the Mark Marin podcast talking about the why the Bibles are usually there in the drawers. Yeah, that was funny, bro.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, oh I forgot about that. Yeah, I gotta make that a bit.
SPEAKER_01No, that was dope, bro. You're like, that's why they have the Bibles there because most of the bad stuff happens in the hotel room.
SPEAKER_05That's hilarious. So I probably did this bit on there. I probably talked about this. I love how comics like, yeah, I'm gonna do that bit on my fourth podcast.
SPEAKER_01What's up, you on YouTube?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, this I think this hotel was over, you know, rest in peace, Selena, like where she, you know.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was over in that area, and it like that was the tourist that they told me that when I walked in. I was like, all right, dude. I don't know if that's the tour, you know.
SPEAKER_04It's like she was shot over here, and I was like, all right, dude.
SPEAKER_05I mean, yeah, it was just a weird thing to be like promoting at your hotel.
SPEAKER_04You want to stay in that room. The parking lot's right over here. I was like, I don't want to know that that was like this tragedy.
SPEAKER_05You know what I mean? It was weird. But uh anyway, so yeah, I uh that's cool. Yeah, I don't know where I'm staying now, some weird place. But um, but I love Corpus. Um, I love the beach and you know, it's like a fun. I think last time they had a uh I walked by a corpus um surf museum, which I thought was pretty pretty ironic because you can't really surf that uh you know much. And you know, it's just some dude during a hurricane on a door as a picture.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure. Typhoon warning surf museum, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, calm it down, Corpus. Yeah, crazy. Nine people have surfed in Corpus. It's relax, you know. I don't even think Hawaii has a surf museum. But corpus, yeah, we're proud of it. Um wow man, so awesome, bro. So I get to perform and do this thing, and uh, you know, and I am sober, so I talk a little bit about that, you know, on stage and kind of like get into the the grittiness of that and you know and try to make it relatable. Even if you drank, you get what I'm saying, because I've you know out there doing I'm not it's not a buzzkill situation, but I just talk about my experiences. Oh, yeah, I was crazy and just waking up in Canada with no shirt on, elbows asleep, how to get here, you know, like stuff like that. Wow, and always keep a 20 in your boot. That's what I've always told people. If you're gonna party in the boot, if you're always if you're gonna party, keep a 20 in your shoe. That's always the key.
SPEAKER_01That's funny, bro. Shoot, man, that's awesome. Yeah, so uh I'm thinking like clean, like clean comedy. I guess you don't really consider it being clean if you're laughing the whole time, basically. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Here's the deal. I you know, I started out not clean, and um, you know, it's uh pretty you know, I just wanted to be a comic. Like I didn't, you know, my influences were just kind of like Sam Kennison and you know Bill Hicks and just Richard Pryor and you know, all that kind of stuff. So I grew up on that. Like that's what I you know thought was like comedy and funny, and those guys are amazing. And uh yeah, and I just kind of did that, you know, grew up in New York comedy, which you know, Dave Vattel and Bill Byrne, all those kind of guys, Patrice. So it's like you know, they're all kind of pushing the envelope and they're edgy and raw and all that stuff. Yeah, and uh so yeah, so I I you know, I just I I don't even think about you know whether it's clean or not. I and the thing was is like sometimes you you when you start out in comedy, you just don't know which direction you're gonna go or where the work's gonna take you and whatever. And I've always said that comics should just have a toolbox, like there's nothing wrong with being edgy, nothing wrong with being you know, blue or whatever. Just but be able to work clean. And I think or at least try it, like see if you can pull it off because there's more money in it, let me tell you. But it's like, but have a but you know, but be be versatile, like be able to do everything, be able to host, be able to be clean, be able to, you know, just be able to do everything in comedy, and then you know, you'll get more work that way. Like comics sometimes, you know, they don't get it. Just because you can crush on a show, on a late show with all your people or your age group or whatever it is, you know, that that's not enough to really sustain yourself and make a living. It's you gotta be able to do crazy stuff. I mean, I do like cruise ships, and they're like, you know, a thousand years old, and you know, and there's family shows, and there's a kid on an eye, you know, he's on an iPad on the front row ignoring me while I'm talking about it next year. So you gotta be able to deal with it. But uh, but yeah, I think with the Nate was, you know, Nate, Nate and I had started out together and I helped him and you know early on and all that stuff, and then he started, you know, using me and whatnot. And so I had to kind of convince him that I could work clean because I was kind of like the one guy out of all the guys he uses, I'm always the guy with their kind of white knuckling when I'm on stage. All right, so you can pull this off.
SPEAKER_01Wow, yeah, for sure, bro. Dang.
SPEAKER_05So, but uh, but I figured it out. I mean, sometimes I'll go a little edgy and they'll be like, hey man, I don't know about that Muslim joke, but uh you know, but hey, I didn't curse, you know, I didn't do any masturbating material. So it's you know, so it's but it's like but it's one of the things that I want to work as a comic, I want to be a part of like everything that's big in comedy, and so I forced myself to figure out how to be funny, you know, both ways. I can be edgy, and and and that's the thing on this, you know, this show or whatever. I'm definitely clean, I'm not up there going blah with a microphone, you know, doing that stuff, but you know, I'll be edgy, I'm an adult, I've gone through sobriety, like I have an edgy life, so I will talk about that. I'm not, you know, I don't want people to come thinking it's a church show, you know what I mean? It's definitely not that. That's the thing, bro.
SPEAKER_01You say clean, they're like, okay, Christian.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's like, you know, I'll do some edgy stuff. And and also I like to, you know, depending on what uh who shows up is like, you know, I I'm pretty good at testing out like what the audience can handle and what they want, you know. I never really blindside too many people. Like I I can feel it out. I think it uh the more you do this, you can look at the people and talk to them and you know figure it out, and you know where to go most of the time.
SPEAKER_01Oh, right on.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you can pivot, yeah, you could pivot out of something you feel is too much for them. Or, you know, if you're a good comic, you'll be aware. The worst thing is comics on stage and they don't not aware of it.
SPEAKER_01So what I mean, do you like just kind of survey the crowd before you go on stage? Do you feel out on stage? Like, how do you what's the process in doing that? A little bit of both.
SPEAKER_05I mean, you could, you know, I mean, if they walk in with red hats, I know what I'm getting, you know. I mean, I I did show on a ship one time. There was like five guys wearing Charlie Kirk shirts. I was like, oh no, holy smokes. I know what this is gonna be like. Oh no, I mean it's okay, but I I don't think comics do that enough. I think it's I think one thing that's crucial is uh kind of watch them as they come in. Like you can, I mean, because we're all kind of like profilers. You start to do comedy long enough, you you can kind of sum up who how people are and you know, kind of what their vibe is. Like if they're Latino, like you, you know, the yeah, like yourself, they come in. Like, I you know, I I know where I can go in a funny place I can play, I can speak a little Spanish, I'll mess around, whatever. Like, you know, it's like I I I have a gauge once I kind of see them, and then when you just drop drop your first couple of lines on stage, you can kind of get a feeling for what they can, you know, handle and take in.
SPEAKER_01Nope. So okay, so in that case, once you profile and all that stuff, you've got to have material for those different types of profiles, so you have to write a lot.
SPEAKER_05You know what I mean? I mean, yeah, I mean, it's like yours in comedy, you just like you have this like jukebox full of of material and and an instinct, which I you know feel is important, you know, this comedy instinct. So it's like whether you know, sometimes you play with the crowd, sometimes you you know, you you try to get it out of them. But uh oh, we got a little question there.
SPEAKER_01Nah, hello, John C and C saying hello, Jonathan from Robstown, Texas, right down the road from Corpus. What's up, dude? Come to the show, man. Let's park. Yeah, come to the show. When's the show? Um we uh Friday uh 18th and 19th. So very unprofessional. That's okay.
SPEAKER_05Two shows. We got Friday, um uh yeah, Friday and Saturday, so uh coming up. So it's gonna be a lot of fun. Come on out, man.
SPEAKER_01Mesquite Street, uh 16 uh 6617 uh Mesquite Street, Corpus Christine, Texas.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's a pizza place, they got good pizza.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, definitely good pizza, bro. For sure. For sure. It's awesome, man. Yeah, come on out, you guys. Uh yeah, so that's cool. So you come into corpus coming through. Uh we're talking about writing, writing, and stuff like that. Um, sorry, I talk asked comedy questions because I'm I'm kind of learning how to do comedy myself. How long have you been doing it? Not I started last year, like in December.
SPEAKER_05That's amazing. You're still excited, you're not jaded. I love it. Yeah, yeah. Enjoy this whole process.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I guess I've kind of like uh now I'm just like, okay, man, now I have to actually work. You know what I mean? I'm at that point, which like meaning like I have to actually write stuff, figure out how to figure out how to write a joke, you know what I mean. I'm reading uh the new comedy bible by Judy Carter.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, whatever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05So just take it all in. That first year is all about just kind of taking in as much as you can. You know, it's like I um one thing too is go to a lot of shows, you know, go go to professional shows and sit in the audience, you know, just like a regular audience person. Don't sit in the back and judge the comic. Like sit there, order your drinks, have a date, whatever. Yeah, and just and just enjoy it as an audience member and watch the comic and kind of see how they're working and what kind of material they do and how they work a crowd and how they get it, like take it all in and then do a lot of comedy history, you know, like uh go back, man. Do go back into the old school stuff and you know, as many albums as you can and uh biographies you can read about comedians and like you know, just kind of be a comedy nerd in that first couple of years, like take it all in and just uh in you know, enjoy learning about comedy. That'll really help.
SPEAKER_01Man, speaking of that, I was watching your yours on the on Dry Bar Cranky Pants, right? Yeah, is that what it's called?
SPEAKER_05It's called like two different things. I don't know what happened. I named it something.
SPEAKER_01You're wearing the you're wearing the black hat, like a black and gray shirt, but uh dude, like you were getting a laugh like every freaking 10 seconds, dude. It was laughter to the whole thing, bro. Like how like how in the heck does he how how do you do that, bro? You know, um and like I I'll tell a joke, it'd take me like one whole minute and still won't get a laugh, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. I mean, well, early on, you know, I kind of focused in on joke structure and kind of setup and punch and stuff. Um you know, uh it depending on you know what kind of uh venue or what, you know, if I'm doing a longer set, sometimes I'll be a little less machine gun, bam, bam, bam. But uh yeah, my brain works pretty fast. And so I uh, you know, some of there was some stuff improved on there a lot, and I just you know my brain's just going. And so when I'm in the zone, if I like a crowd or if I want to break the crowd, or for you know, uh, I'll I'll really kind of lock in. And um, yeah, and I think it's like the more you you know, people always say this cliche thing, have fun up there, but um it's it's a real thing. Like if you're literally having fun, you will be funny because you'll be loose and you'll be, you know, like you know how you make your homeboys laugh, and it's like everybody's having a good time. It's like that's what you want to do with that audience, you want to make them your friends and make you know this connection.
SPEAKER_01So man, so definitely don't piss them off, right?
SPEAKER_05I mean, I've been funny when I've pissed them off, you know. Okay, but it's usually the people that are on my side or we're all laughing at the people that suck. You can make anything funny.
SPEAKER_01Nice. Uh let me see. Uh so and then so check out. So we got Valerie Estrella. Uh uh hello, how you doing on here? There we go. I just got this up. Dustin's coming through September 18th or 19th, Mesquite Street Comedy Club. Uh, you go to uh Mesquite Street uh pizza, you go to their website, and then here's the ticket link if you want to buy it online. So check it out, you guys. Pizza.
SPEAKER_05I'll be uh uh I'm coming in, I'm coming on stage after the mozzarella sticks. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Don't miss out.
SPEAKER_05I open her bread knots, yeah. Garlic bread knot, and then me, and then me.
SPEAKER_01You're next, you're next, bro. That's what's up, dude. So are most of the places that you perform at, do they serve pizza there?
SPEAKER_05Uh, I mean, it's I I'll perform anywhere. I'm I'm a comedy slut, like I don't care. I'll go anywhere. I just you know, just anywhere there's a microphone and a little bit of money, I'll show up. Like, I don't really care.
SPEAKER_01Um you know what? Yeah, that's cool, bro. Uh you know what I found interesting. So you didn't go to New York to study to to work on comedy, you went to get your degree, and then and then you stumbled, or I guess came into comedy. That's very interesting because most people are like, I want to do comedy, I'm gonna go to New York or whatever.
SPEAKER_05I went to uh New York to go to art school, and um that's you know, I I I didn't know what kind of artist I wanted to be. I just kind of like I was kind of good at art and different things. I thought fashion was kind of a cool idea, just walking around with supermodels all day. That seemed pretty interesting. Hey, let me have your number. Yeah, I'm the straight guy in fashion. Yeah, I was like, that seems like a pretty good course of action here. But uh yeah, so I did that and just met you know, my girlfriend at the time, she worked at a hotel, and there was a guy, an aspiring comedian, and he worked at the front desk with her, and he always talked to her about comedy, and then I kind of met him and his P. Corielli, pretty big comic, and then we talked, and you know, he kind of took me under his wing, and I said, I've always wanted to do this, and then yeah, he kind of you know started working at uh this comedy club in New York and was a bus boy and that kind of thing. Wow, got on stage for the first time and and just kind of it's like a high, you know.
SPEAKER_01Wow, bro.
SPEAKER_05So that's my new drug.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, dude, that's amazing, bro. That's so amazing. How like you're bus. You were bus in there for time, right? Or to yeah, yeah, right.
SPEAKER_05I would bus, I would clean the toilets, I would, you know, send out flowers, whatever, man. It's like because I didn't like mics, you know. Open mics were and open mics are good for comics. I don't want to say don't go to a mic, because you gotta go, you gotta go up somewhere. Right. But uh it just wasn't for me. I just felt like um I just couldn't find the thing. And so I was lucky enough to find a place that would put me on stage if I worked for it, if I paid dues for it, and you know, did whatever needed to be done at the club and sweep the club, whatever, man. I would put down the broom and then pick up the mic. Like that was my mentality. Wow. I was like, because at least like at least I would be up in front of like four people from Sweden or whatever, you know, and like three people from Harlem or whatever it was. I knew they were real people and not just comics, you know, writing in their notebook, waiting for their chance to get up on stage, you know, and not paying attention to me. And so I felt like I could get something from the crowd if I worked. So I'm a big fan of that. If the if the clubs will let you do something for the club, you know, whether it be marketing or like work the door, if you're not in yet to get it, you know, at a club, it's like I think it's a good way to go. Because the best part is you meet a lot of the bigger comics, and so relationships are everything in this business. And so if you can, you know, work at a club, you know, uh get some time and then meet guys that are doing stuff and like you know, you're fans of, and you get to and it's like a workshop, you get to watch them work all the time, and so it's uh yeah, I think it's a good thing. A lot of and a lot of people started that way. Mark Marin, David Tell, like everybody they worked this the comedy store, they work the door, like a lot of that that is a path for a lot of comics that have made it today.
SPEAKER_01So you're talking so you're talking getting in front of an actual audience that's there for comedy as opposed to okay, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_05And it might be like a it might be when they're dropping checks, it might be last on the show. But but that makes you stronger. Because when you can when you can like get them when it's like you know, end of the show or when they're dropping checks, it's like then you you you're building your comedy, you know, like your immune system almost. Like you just get tougher and tougher as you like have the worse the worse the spot is, and the more you get laughs, the better you're getting.
SPEAKER_01Whoa, that's crazy. And it's like, whoa, dude. And that show that shows like your dedication to it, because some people will see that and be like, nah, I don't want to go last or I don't want to go first or whatever, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05But you just gotta you gotta be humbled, man. It's like um, because it's just you know, I do every I'll do 20,000 people and then I'll do a bar show where they won't turn the game off. You know what I mean? Like it's like it doesn't it doesn't matter, and to me it's the same, you know. It's like you know, I don't care. I just want to grab a mic and be funny. Like I don't it just it didn't affect me. I don't I mean the 20,000 that pays better, but I'm you know, but I don't but when it comes to the comedy part of it, it's like it's just as important for me to crush those six people at it freaking you know uh at Applebee's or wherever I'm performing, yeah, than it than it is to, you know. So yeah, I just think you just have to kind of like make it all about the work and you know it's sometimes it's well sometimes it's just about one joke, you know. You just like to get this one joke out, and I don't care what the crowd's like, I gotta try this joke and whatever. So comedy's yeah, it's it's always has to be about the process and just getting funnier.
SPEAKER_01Wow, bro, that's amazing. That's amazing. And so your your girlfriend, you met her, which is has she been doing comedy longer than you have?
SPEAKER_05Uh no, she's uh all you know, probably about uh Seven seven years later she started. But yeah, yeah, she's been around. She's been on Colbert and stuff. Leah Banma. She's done a lot of comedy. She headlines. She has a podcast. She does a bunch of stuff. But yeah, we uh I was I was a little older on comedy when I met her in in uh you know the in New York. And yeah, we just kind of and that's the thing, is like that's a risky thing because I've uh you know sometimes two comics doesn't quite work out. I always say two comics shouldn't be together. It should always be like somebody with a regular, uh consistent job, somebody that has their has their crap together, and then a crazy artist. You know, I mean you got two crazy artists. I mean it's chaos.
SPEAKER_01That's funny, bro.
SPEAKER_05Wow, our ADHD is just flying around the apartment, nothing, we lose everything. Every we're just ending every conversation with, hey, I'm gonna use that.
SPEAKER_01Right in the midst of the wall. Yeah, I'm ADD. My wife's a little bit autistic, so we're we usually fight for the dopamine hit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we have a lot in common, my brother.
SPEAKER_01Like, why am I fighting? I don't know. We're just fighting. Yeah, that's that's hilarious. Yeah, that's uh that's what's up. And then so you've been so you were in New York for a good while, and then you moved to LA five years ago.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we've been out here about five years, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, is it is it about really okay?
SPEAKER_05Oh, it's the greatest. I love LA. I just I yeah, I just um New York I love, but it was like, but I kind of grew out of it. Like I felt like I did New York, you know. I did all the shows, did I pass all the clubs, I did all the stuff. I just saw all the Broadway shows. I did all the, you know, I feel like I did New York, you know. I lived all over the city, I lived in Queens, I lived in Manhattan, like I did everything. And uh we came out here, and it's like, you know, it's just sunshine, and like you drive through the desert, and you drive to the beach, and it's like New York's like you know, it's so compact. And it was like kind of around the pandemic, so it was like everybody was, you know, it was all sketchy on the subway and all that. So I like it out here, I really do.
SPEAKER_01Man, that's cool. Yeah, we went out there for a minute uh a while back. It's it I like it out there, bro. The weather is nice, the mountains are friggin', they're just right there, bro. It's awesome.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's it's a cool, it's got everything out here, you know. You you drive to like Joshua Tree and drive to Springs, Vegas is four hours away. Like, it's just a you know, I dig it. It's uh I like it a lot.
SPEAKER_01So so you live there. Do you practice there? Like, do you work on do you do like uh open mics or shows there in it in LA?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I do clubs and stuff. Yeah, I'm I'm beyond the open mic, bro.
SPEAKER_01No, I don't know what to call it. I don't know what to call it. I I say open mic because that's all I know.
SPEAKER_05Sometimes I gotta bring people speaking of you want to do my show, bring some people out. We're a little light on ticket sales. Nice. You use some bodies in those seats. If you guys like pizza, um like yeah, I well it's interesting because it's like you really, you know, it it's a very hard thing to do when you like start comedy in a place and you spend um you know years and years kind of like paying your dues and and and working your way up and getting television and getting stuff and kind of doing your thing, and then you know, you get established at the clubs, and then you gotta come to a place that doesn't know you, you're competing with like David Spade and like these huge stars and stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's yeah, it's definitely uh it's tricky. Like you gotta figure it out, you know. Even with you come even when you come experienced or you come with credits or that kind of thing, it still takes you a minute to kind of figure out a different scene.
SPEAKER_01That's so crazy. So, like, so obviously you're doing podcasts like social media. Do you have because I seen like com comedians now, they're like on TikTok, Instagram, and all that other stuff. What's your take on all that stuff? Do you feel like you gotta be on there? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, it's it's tough, you know. You feel like um, you know, when I started in comedy, it was like, you know, the number one thing was get funny. Uh the number two thing was like, you know, get road work, and then the number three thing was like get a TV credit. And it was it. That was it. That was that was like the one, two, three. And so because, you know, and then once you got the TV credit, you would get more road work because you would you would have that you know validation that you were like a real comic or whatever. And then now it's all over the place, you know. It's like you get a following on TikTok, you know, they don't care, they don't care if you've ever been on TV. If you can, if you got 300,000 followers and you can fill up a Thursday through Sunday, then you know, you're in. And so it's a different thing. And and for us older comics, it's like you know, it's like you see us, you see us on there all banged up trying to figure out TikTok and trying to try to do a reel, and it's like it's never consistent. It's like one day I'll be like, hey, I love vinyl records, and next day I'm like, here's me and my dog, and like I can't, I can never like find a rhythm with it. Like I'm just all over the place. And so, and then I do a podcast where I'm just basically doing this, talking comedy and whatever, or writing jokes, or you know, so but but I'm okay with it, you know. It's like you know, it but it's tough. It's like, you know, you definitely um it's a new kind of landscape for a lot of veteran comedians, and some guys hooked on to it early, and then some of us are still trying to figure it out, but you know, but I'll still I'll still give it a shot, I'll still get on there. You'll see me do something on there, but it's it's not easy, man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right on that man, you're like way up there, bro. I'm feeling like I'm nervous now, like talking to you because you got like all this like accolades and all this other stuff, and I'm just like, well, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Um yeah, but dude, but I'm making a living and I got a good life. Like that's that's the sacrifice. It's like you uh you just like you know, you don't be scared, be inspired. Like it's right now when I say that, I'm just talking about like like there's so many levels in comedy. I mean, I may not be Chris Rock, but I'm like I don't I don't have a boss, you know what I mean? I don't have to I don't have to clock in to Home Depot, you know what I mean? Like I'm like I got a good life. Yeah work with 20 more tool buses and private jets. I'm doing all right. It's like but I'm just saying, but everything media is a is something that I'm still trying to figure out doesn't mean that you're not gonna work, it just means that it's just like it's just a you know it's just a thing you gotta figure out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a different level, like you're saying. Yeah, it's just different levels, yeah. That's what's up, bro. So you're originally from Kilgore, Texas, for people who don't know. Um, and then you grew up your your story is pretty trippy, bro, because you you became Mormon for a minute. Oh yeah, are you still Mormon?
SPEAKER_05Or no, no, no. Okay, and then you still I mean I love the Mormons, I do, and they're good people. I just like I went, you know, it was some you know, it was like my parents were crazy and stuff, and drinking and doing drugs and stuff. Grew up in a biker bar and all kinds of chaos, and so yeah, I was just like, you know, it's like I think to rebel was like go the other direction, you know. It was like a lot of kids drank and go crazy to rebel against their parents. It was like, yeah, I'll just get sober and join this crazy church, but I'll show you.
SPEAKER_01That's funny, bro. That's it's funny because my dad he busted me one time with some joints, and I wrote the joints with Bible paper.
SPEAKER_05Oh man.
SPEAKER_01I was like, What because I could because I I don't know. Yeah, it's a double whammy, so uh I don't really know, I don't know. Um, anyways, sorry, I'm just you don't talk about it, you should.
SPEAKER_05It's very funny.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm trying to make it for how to make it funny, you know what I mean? Uh another another thing too that I talk about is like uh like the Jehovah's Witness. I know you had that Jehovah's Witness joke about your girl. That was funny, bro. Um, but like I had a co-worker, he was like, uh nobody's allowed to have the name of the Lord, and he was Jehovah's Witness, right? And then I found out that they don't have parties, and I was like, bro, you just eliminated like 95% of Hispanics, bro, because we all party and like half of us is named Jesus.
SPEAKER_05Hispanics are the best. I went to the beach with like a Spanish family was there and stuff. It was the greatest experience I ever had in my life at a beach. It was in corpus, it was phenomenal. It was like, it was just like I mean, you get like white people, it's like you just got like a little towel and you're flip-flops. I mean, they're coming in hot, they got two trucks, there's like poles being standing there, there's a pig that's still alive. They're just like they're just coming in. You got you got a boyla just making those tortillas right out of her pocket. You're like, what is going on? Give us a reason to party, bro. This is amazing. It's so cool. I love dude, I love it. Any any Mexican families, if you want to invite me out, I'll I will be your gringo. I speak enough Spanish to get by, we'll have a good time. Yeah, that was cool.
SPEAKER_01You felt you learned Spanish and then you did. So you were in Chile, Chile Pila. Yes, that was Chicago. That's amazing, bro.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, as well.
SPEAKER_01That was a good experience.
SPEAKER_05It was crazy, you know. When you you know, when you're young, it's like you don't know what's going on yet. You gotta you gotta make you know crazy decisions and figure stuff out, and so it was a lot of fun, man. I you know, it's like wow, it's just going to a different country and like you know, sometimes I'd be there, and I you know, Spanish is tough, man, like when you're just you know not around it and you just you gotta just figure it out. And so sometimes I'd be the only guy speaking English, and so I it's like you you learn it pretty quick. You know, it's funny. I learned this how I learned Spanish. I think uh Telemundo or Univision or whatever was on, and they were playing Star Wars, like dubbed in Spanish, and I knew Star Wars, you know, because I've I've I've seen it a million times, yeah. So that's when it clicked, is we're like on solo, you'll sell you, and then you start doing something. I'm like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah. It starts coming together. It's funny, bro. So it's like that's when I kind of clicked.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I'm a little rusty now, but you gotta be on top.
SPEAKER_01I took a German class in college and we had to watch a movie, and the one we watched was a few good men in German. Yeah. You can't handle the truth. Dude, dude, uh the funny another thing that that so I'm Hispanic, Mexican American. We call ourselves Hispanic usually down here, but I have the accent, but I don't speak.
SPEAKER_05You speak Spanish?
SPEAKER_01I speak it a little bit like like very, very little. And there's and there's a lot of that that happens. It's weird, it's weird, bro.
SPEAKER_05But that's so if you say Mexican, is that weird?
SPEAKER_01Or I can no like we'll like we'll say we'll say Mexican, like, oh, he's Mexican or whatever, but yeah, we don't say Latino like the way they do in in California.
SPEAKER_05Oh, the East Coast, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's mostly like Hispanic or Mexican, and and like Latino is like you know, California or whatever.
SPEAKER_05You should you guys should bring it, you should bring it to Corpus. Latino, I'm Latino. I'm Hispanic. That's not Latin.
SPEAKER_01If we talk to another guy, maybe if I tell another person over here, hey, yeah, I'm Latino, they're like, no, you're not Latino, you're Hispanic, bro. Hey, dude, I thought that's pretty cool that you're you're part Native American. I thought that was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, uh my grandfather, Choctaw, out of Durant, Oklahoma. That's dope. It was like, yeah, he lived on a reservation his whole life and everything.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was and you could vote, you can like vote. What was it like vote for something? That that's pretty dope, bro.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I have my card. I can, you know, I can live in the card. I could live in Oklahoma. I got my EBT uh Choctaw card. I can live I can live in Oklahoma for like 30 bucks, but that but the catch is you gotta live in Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_01There it is. LA LA they say Chicano. That's what Valerie says. Chicano, I love Chicanos, man.
SPEAKER_05Chicanos are my favorite people. Like I love the the freaking cars, man, and the artwork. I love all that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, dude. Oh, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Like I'm a wannabe Chicano, man. I love all that stuff. It's great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, it's interesting, like, because uh, I mean, we're like it's totally different here, like the the Mexicans or Hispanics from down here. Like, I listen to metal music, bro. Like metal music right next to Cumbia music, right next to country music, you know what I mean? And I wear these this type of hat. I don't wear like a straw hat. Hairnet, I'm gonna wear a hairnet. I used to, yeah, right.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_01Hey, dude, so you wear hats on stage. I I've always I had this question because I'm losing my hair, bro. And I always wear we all are, man.
SPEAKER_05None of us are 25 anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, how does so what's your like take on that as far as being a comedian wearing a hat on stage?
SPEAKER_05Um I if you're funny, nobody cares what you wear on stage. I mean, Sam Kinnison, you remember him? He wore like a backward, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. A reggae beret, like a reggae hat and a trench coat. Nobody, you know what I mean? Like he was like, whatever, man. I think it's like but the fun thing about stand-up is you get to kind of like do whatever you want. It's your show. You you know, you get to make it fun. I always say, you know, you should outdress the audience. And so like I wear fly hats and stuff. I'm not, you know, I try to I try to make it fun. I try to be, you know, it's it's it's a show, you know, like rock it out, have fun with it. That's the thing, you can do whatever you want, man. It doesn't matter what you look like. You could just you know so many different like dice clay, you know, like leather jackets and yeah, punk metal. I love metal, I love punk, I love all that stuff. But uh I think that's what I I think I was attracted to with comedy, is where you could just kind of do whatever you want. And you could like and you could use all those things like I like fashion, I like you know, I like rock and roll, I like whatever. So I can like put all those things in my act, you know, kind of inspired by those things. Wow. So it's fun. Yeah, wear a hat, don't wear a hat. It doesn't matter. If you're funny, you're funny.
SPEAKER_01No matter wow, that's so funny. So it's just bring, just bring it, bro. Just just bring it.
SPEAKER_05I mean, look at DL Hugley and like he wears crazy hats.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Cedric.
SPEAKER_05You just be funny, like it just you should just be comfortable with with what you want to wear on stage. It don't matter. Elton John wore like you know, duck outfits and played piano. Like, nobody cares. There's no rules in art, there's no rules.
SPEAKER_01Dude, that's cool. Take on it, man. That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. Yeah, I I heard heard a comedian doing a workshop and they were mentioning that even facial hair, too. I was like, Well, I like my facial hair, I like to wear hats, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05So it's just like some of these dudes teaching these comedy things, man. You're just like, look, it's like first of all, like if if you're if you respect what they're doing, then take their class. If you don't, if you don't, if you're getting more work than they are, like don't take their class. But it's like, but it's like people can say whatever they want, and and it and some things are general rules, you know, but then some things are like maybe club etiquette, maybe clubs have rules that maybe they don't want you wearing shorts on stage, maybe they don't want you wearing hats or whatever. But it's like, you know, it it it it really it really should just do what you want to do, what you're comfortable comfortable doing. But if someplace like wants me to dress up, then I'll wear a hat still, but it's a you know, it's a it's a freaking Stetson with like $500 hat. Yeah, yeah. Sometimes I might. I might show up to a club and wear a trucker hat and whatever. I don't care. It's just like like I said, it doesn't matter. Dave Chappelle balled the display. Well, Dave Chappelle wears his own merch. Like how tacky is that?
SPEAKER_04He's one of the greatest comics of all time.
SPEAKER_05He's like wearing, I just think that's so funny. He's like, he's wearing his Dave Chappelle shirt.
SPEAKER_03You're like, really, dude? Like, you know, yeah, we know who you are.
SPEAKER_01You got the QR code on the back, sleeveless Chappelle shirt.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Just get my website on the back. That's so funny. That I I said that some people got mad at me, and I was like, dude, that's hilarious. He's wearing his own merch. I think it's so funny.
SPEAKER_01Nice, man. Got the show coming out September 18th through 19th. Check out Justin Chaffin, you guys. Uh man. Come on out, you guys. Check it out. Um, uh, so you can do you can do uh uh so what are some things I I'm trying to get you like to something like I could get a clip of you saying something about the show that way I can clip it and send it out. Uh maybe some words or something. Let me hide. Some words, maybe some words. Yeah, give me five words. Ready? Here we go.
SPEAKER_05Almost a bromeyase.
SPEAKER_01So okay, so uh what can some people expect expect that uh the show at Musquete Street uh uh uh and going to watch you your comedy show?
SPEAKER_05You know, expect to have fun, man. It's like I I freestyle, I don't know what I'm gonna do, you know. I play around with some ideas, but uh, but I never know what I'm gonna do till I kind of get up there. Yeah, and so I enjoy that kind of comedy where I'm just kind of like letting it just you know, let the flow happen and just you know have a good time with it. And I'll play with it, I'll talk to you, I'll get it, we'll have an interaction, we'll get it going. Um, yeah, I'm gonna, you know, I'm gonna kind of break into some stories growing up kind of white trash in Texas and you know, going into Mexico, my dad buying a bunch of switchblades, trying to sell them in Dallas, like just crazy stories, him getting arrested, my mom, you know, just crazy. Yeah, I don't know if everybody's dad got arrested on their family vacation, but uh, you know.
SPEAKER_01Well, hey, well, hey, well, you're not an official Texan until you point your gun at your dad for hitting your mom.
SPEAKER_05Uh dude, I've done that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy, bro. That is so crazy.
SPEAKER_05It was a shotgun, but I did it.
SPEAKER_01It wasn't, dude. Holy smoke, dude.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm telling you, I'm a wannabe Chicano baby.
SPEAKER_01Hey, come on, bro.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, I mean, it's like, you know, I think we all kind of just live crazy lives, and like I just like to play and I just like to do comedy. And like I said, I have a lot of different styles of comedy, you know, and so I like to kind of showcase that when I'm on stage. And so I might do straight material, just one-liners, I might just play with the crowd, I might do stories. I don't know, man. We'll see what happens.
SPEAKER_02You guys gotta show up, though. Gotta show up, man.
SPEAKER_01Let's go, y'all.
SPEAKER_05Small thing too, it's not a lot of seeds, so it can't be that hard to fill. Just come on out. Let's go. Let's go. You know, it doesn't. I'm not just a corny white guy. Like, I get, you know, it's like I'll I'll make you laugh. I've live, I've lived all over the world. Like, we'll have a good time, man.
SPEAKER_01Let's go, bro. That's awesome, man. Zest. Uh, is there anything you want to share? I know we touched on a lot of cool stuff um about yourself. Uh, I was gonna ask, I forgot, bro. You're hilarious.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you would you have a gummy? Did you have a gummy before you started?
SPEAKER_01Nah, my my mother was high, likely when she was pregnant with me in the 80s.
SPEAKER_05Oh well, I'll talk about that too. My mom smoked, she smoked weed like every day, dude. We bought her a pipe for Mother's Day, like it was hilarious. She's like she's like at the she's like at the Judy's Priest concert, like she took me to Led Zeppelin, man.
SPEAKER_01Oh, come on.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, not too many people could say that. Yeah, for sure, bro. Yeah, um, yeah, man. Just come on out. We'll have a good time. And this is like I'm a Texan, so I get what being a Texan is. I get that struggle, you know, of like, you know, we have like two, I feel like Texans have like a we have like two angels on us, you know. We gotta, you know, like I because I live in California, so like I feel like I have a California angel and a Texan on my shoulder. Like the like the Californian would be like, hey, maybe you should drive, you know, a Prius and protect the environment. And then the Texan will be like, shut up, Snowflake, get in the truck.
SPEAKER_01Get in the truck, bro.
SPEAKER_05So like like I get that thing, you know what I mean? Like, you know, it's like I don't know, I don't care if you're Talo Rico or if you're like hardcore or other side, whatever. We I I know both worlds, and I'm all my friends are both. Yeah, so like I can talk to everybody, and so I think it's a I think that's one thing I would say is like I understand Texas, and I and I I like to have fun and talk about that, and it's like I understand the levels of Texans, and so we could play with that as well.
SPEAKER_01Oh, nice, bro. Yeah, and we're all different from like because Texas is so big, bro.
SPEAKER_05We're down here on the South, so big, it's young, it's old, it's like all over the place. It's like you know, and so like, yeah, when I was dude, when I was in high school in Texas, man, I was kind of like a borderline goth kind of kid and pesch mode and whatever. Yeah, yeah. Like, man, that wasn't easy back in the you know, like 90s or whatever. People were like, hey boy, why are you looking like that? Pick up their pants.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I had a rodeo team in my high school, those guys bite anybody that was like weird hair or whatever. With his ropers just going down the hall. That's tough, bro. Skull in his mouth, spitting on the freaking, you know, like I had to deal with that. So I know what being a weird guy in Texas is like.
SPEAKER_01That's funny, bro.
SPEAKER_05Not easy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I had to play football with all these football players, and I'm like, bro, oh yeah, it's like remember the titans for you, man. Yeah, exactly. Just they're just like putting that suits right there. He'll do it, put some, we'll put in some work. Twice as hard. Yeah, twice as hard. He's gonna make it work. That's funny, bro. Uh yeah, so thanks for coming on the show. Um, dude, just last thing. So on your on your so congrats on 18 years sobriety. Thanks, man. I haven't I haven't drank or smoked in a minute. I but it's weird because like I don't consider myself sober, I just consider myself I don't drink or smoke. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I don't I mean yeah, it doesn't matter, man. Sometimes I do that whole program thing, sometimes I'll be a year, I don't give it. At all. Like it's really just about just what's good for you, what's good for the people you love, and what's gonna be better for your future, you know. So it's like you figure it out. You don't, it doesn't, you know, there's no rules on always how to do it. You just gotta take care of yourself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what's up, bro. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_05Alcohol, it ages you out, man. You gotta be careful, man. It'll get for sure. It'll take you, it's a rough one. You're better off doing gummies or something, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, yeah. I got an uncle, bro. He's he's like he's really sick, and he's been like every time at every party, bro. He's the one that's always like he's always drunk, throwing the gritos. I'm like, dude, now not the old is sick, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, apple's great, and it's like people should have drink. I love I used to I love beer, like I you know, but it's like I I miss beer. Like, I'll do like an NA Guinness or something, like you know, you know, I love it. I love the taste of beer. But you gotta, you know, just gotta, but I don't, you know, I'd rather like gummy or something where you're just like giggly. I mean, I don't do any of that, but I think it's better for people. It's like giggly is way better than like, hey, you want to fight me? You know, it's like no, dude. Why people guys get drunk and want to fist fight. You're like, what are you doing, dude? There's a chick over there. She's waiting for somebody to talk to her, too. She's waiting, bro. Just pound each other, then pound that beautiful girl over there. What's going on? Guys are idiots when they drink.
SPEAKER_01They're wasting time, bro. Wasting time.
SPEAKER_05It's like, ugh, yeah. So just those days. Yeah, fist fight, fist fights on stage. I mean, I'd say something to somebody to come on stage. Oh, shoot! And it was like back in the day, so I didn't even get I didn't even get to go viral. You know what I mean? I just I just got a black, I just got two black eyes. Pictures on my on my space.
SPEAKER_03That's about as that's about as far as it went.
SPEAKER_01That's funny, bro. It's in my archive.
SPEAKER_05It's on my Snapchat.
SPEAKER_01Hey, bro. Thanks a lot for coming through. Dustin, I keep saying that, bro. This is the Mexican goodbye. We say goodbye, and we keep talking, yeah, it's a bunch of times.
SPEAKER_05The Tupperware, I know what's going on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, do they have H E B in California?
SPEAKER_05H E B? Yeah. Uh no, well, it's funny. I grew up in Hirsch, Ulis Bedford, which is not the grocery store, but that's the name of where I'm from, pretty much. H E B. Uh, they don't.
SPEAKER_01We have I was gonna so my customary question is what's your favorite H what's your favorite H E B or your or or like we got Kroger, which I work with we got it's a Ralph's, which is basically it's the Kroger company.
SPEAKER_05So they have that's what they have in California. They have Ralph's and uh that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_01This person said she's she's she found out she's allergic to weed. Crazy, man. Crazy.
SPEAKER_05Sorry, she just wakes up like just covered in Doritos, like what is your reaction? No, I think it's good. It's good to know what's it's good to here's the deal. Here's the deal, just do what you can handle. That's what I always say. Oh if you can do five shots and and joy and everything's and you don't get arrested and everything's cool, then be the five shot guy. I'm not judging. And if you if you can smoke like spliffs and everything's fine and you don't wind up like losing your job because you couldn't go to work for four days, that's fine. Then do that, but just know what you can handle. You know, I I can handle nicotine pouches, I can handle Red Bull, that's about it, and some espresso, that's about as far as I can go.
SPEAKER_01See, that's the thing, bro. I think that's why I stopped because I got ADD and I hyper focus and I'll smoke and smoke and smoke and smoke and forget about life.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, you know, it's like you could go back. I think just take a break, go back, whatever, man. I'm not, I just don't want people to think I'm just like I'm just on stage going, you guys need to get it together. Like that it's it's not a meeting, okay? Like, I'm I'm just a regular dude doing comedy. I don't want you to get up there and be like, Oh, I gotta stop drinking before I go to this show. What are you gonna hand out coins?
SPEAKER_01Hand out coins, eh?
SPEAKER_05Are you gonna be my sponsor?
